How to surgically treat cases of isolated Class II gingival recessions?
Traditionally, there were two approaches: the Coronally Advanced Flap
(CAF) technique and the Tunnel Technique.
In this clinical video, Dr. Lorenzo Tavelli presents the Tunneled Coronally Advanced Flap (T-CAF) protocol, a technique that he recently published.
In particular, a clinical case is shown in which, in addition to
managing a class II recession on the two premolars, a distally
rotated canine presenting an unsuitable soft tissue phenotype around it has to be treated.
The modification of the phenotype is necessary both in order to
better stabilize the area but also to avoid the risk of future recessions.
Participants will appreciate the incision protocol for the T-CAF technique that allows to access the defect area, clean it and place the collagen matrix, positioning it coronally to allow the flap to be free to move in a coronal direction to reach the predetermined position, thus increasing the thickness of the soft tissue.

About the speaker
Dr. Lorenzo Tavelli is Assistant Professor at the School of Dental Medicine of the Harvard University in Boston. He is among the world's brightest young periodontists and has already received numerous awards, as well as published over 60 articles in scientific journals.

Full-time faculty member in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity, Division of Periodontology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (Boston, USA), Dr. Tavelli graduated from the University of Milan in 2017. He completed his three-year residency in Periodontics and his Master of Science in 2020 at the University of Michigan. His main focus has been to conduct clinical research in periodontal and peri-implant plastic surgery. Dr. Tavelli has published more than 80 scholarly publications in international peer-reviewed journals in periodontics and implant dentistry. He has been the recipient of several research awards, including the 2021 Goldman Clinical Research award by the Italian Society of Periodontology (SiDP), the 2020 American Academy of Periodontology Balint Orban Research Competition, first prize in the research competition at the 2020 National Osteology Symposium, the 2020 American Academy of Periodontology Foundation School Research Award, and first prize in the research competition at the third International Symposium on soft tissue management focused on teeth and implant dentistry in Florence, Italy. Since August 2021, Dr. Tavelli has been a full-time faculty at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, USA.
