Through clinical examples, participants will learn to diagnose, plan, and treat soft tissue deficiencies with both biological and prosthetic solutions.
In particular, this lesson delves into the apical-coronal position of the interdental papilla and how their loss affects the aesthetic perception of a smile, even among laypeople. It also presents the latest research on gingival color and shade variability within the dental arch, highlighting the importance of accurate shade matching for natural results. Treatment strategies for managing “pink” aesthetics are discussed, including the use of gingival-shaded ceramics and pink prosthetic materials—evaluating when their application is appropriate for small vs large defects.
Clinical cases illustrate interdisciplinary management of attachment loss, orthodontic eruption, endodontic therapy, and aesthetic crown lengthening. The lecture concludes with an example of soft tissue recession following implant treatment, offering insights into prevention and restoration of the gingival contour.

Stephen J. Chu, DMD, MSD, CDT received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree (DMD) from the University of Pennsylvania. He obtained his Master of Science degree (MSD) in restorative dentistry and completed the advanced education program in prosthodontics at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Chu subsequently became a board-certified dental technician in ceramics and obtained a master’s degree in dental technology from the New York University College of Dentistry (MDT). He is the former director of the continuing education program in advanced esthetic dentistry at NYUCD. He is also a former Adjunct Clinical Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at NYUCD. Dr. Chu has authored seven textbooks collectively in the field of aesthetic dentistry, restorative dentistry, color in dentistry and implant dentistry. He has published over 90 articles in the dental literature and is the Associate Editor of the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry (JERD). He is a much sought-after teacher and a worldwide lecturer in aesthetic, restorative and implant dentistry.
