What it covers
Perforations are the most frequent complications in mucogingival surgery and in this video lecture, several clinical clips will be shown as examples to clarify to the participants which are the most delicate steps in which the risk of perforation increases significantly; the execution of the deep split thickness and the detachment of the muscular insertion from the periosteum in primis.
Participants will be able to deepen their knowledge about the clinical protocol to be followed when realizing that a perforation has occurred. In the final part of the video lecture, Prof. Zucchelli will show a clinical video through which he will illustrate to participants the possible perforation caused by the detachment of well-adherent muscle structures that cause fragility to the mucosa.
In particular, this lesson focuses on the following topics:

- What to do when you realize that a perforation has occurred?
- What are the areas where the risk of perforation is greatest?

Instructors
Giovanni Zucchelli, DDS, Ph.D. graduated in 1988 from the University of Bologna, Italy with a degree in dentistry. He was Professor of Periodontology and Implantology at the University of Bologna, Italy, from 2000 to 2025. Giovanni Zucchelli received many awards for clinical research in periodontology in Europe and the United States. Innovator of several soft tissue plastic surgical techniques, he is also author of more than 100 publications in Pubmed. He is speaker at major international conferences on periodontology and has taught theoretical and practical (with live surgery) courses in numerous countries. Zucchelli is the author of the book titled, "Mucogingival Esthetic Surgery" best seller from Quintessence Publishing which is published in 10 different languages and co-author of two illustrated textbooks on periodontal plastic surgery (Ed. Martina) and of the chapter "Mucogingival Therapy-Periodontal Plastic Surgery" in Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (Lindhe J, Lang NP, Karring T [eds], Wiley-Blackwell).
La dott.ssa Stefanini si laurea in Odontoiatria e protesi dentaria con lode nel 2005. Nel 2011 consegue il Master di II livello in Parodontologia presso l’Università di Siena in collaborazione con la SidP. Dal 2012 è socia attiva della SidP (Società Italiana di Parodontologia). Nel 2016 consegue il Dottorato in Scienze mediche e dei Servizi e dal 2018 è Ricercatrice presso l’Università di Bologna dove insegna sia al Corso di Laurea in Odontoiatria e Protesi dentaria che al corso di Laurea in Igiene Dentale. Inoltre, è Vice Responsabile dell’area didattica presso la Clinica Odontoiatrica dell’Università di Bologna, Fellow dell’ International Team of Implantology (ITI), coautrice di pubblicazioni scientifiche su riviste nazionali ed internazionali e relatrice in numerosi congressi in Italia e all’estero.
