What it covers

Revisiting traditional surgical techniques through a modern microsurgical lens can dramatically improve both predictable outcomes and patient comfort.

In this clinical module, Benjamin Cortasse and Julien Mourlaas demonstrate how to execute the FGG and its modified variant with absolute precision. You will learn how to approach sites with a complete lack of keratinized tissue, shallow vestibular depth, or severe frenal pull where flap or tunnel techniques are contraindicated. The instructors detail how optical aids, microsurgical blades, and 7-0 suture placement eliminate secondary healing and dead space through meticulous inlay fit.

Master these updated protocols to transform high-risk mandibular incisor sites safely, effectively, and with minimal donor site morbidity.

In particular, this lesson covers:

  • FGG Indications & Foundations: Treating severe sites with shallow vestibules, absent apical keratinized tissue, and taut frena.
  • Microsurgical Inlay Technique: Executing sharp split-thickness beds and calibrated tissue grafts for primary-intention healing.
  • The Modified FGG Variant: Folding back a superficial vascular flap over avascular roots to boost graft survival and coverage rates.
  • Advanced Suturing & Patient Comfort: Utilizing periostream-anchored sutures, vertical papillary passes, and thread-tip conditioning to maximize stability and post-op comfort.

Benjamin Cortasse
Periodontist and Implantologist, Expert in Microsurgery and Digital Workflows

Dr. Benjamin Cortasse graduated from the University of Montpellier, where he earned Advanced Graduate Certificates (CES) in Biomaterials and Periodontology, alongside Post-Graduate University Diplomas (DU) in Oral Implantology and Maxillofacial Expertise. He maintains a private practice in Pernes-les-Fontaines, France, while actively lecturing in periodontology and implantology for various university master’s programs and scientific organizations, including the Société Odontologique de Paris (SOP). As a member of an international micro-surgery research group led by Dr. Eric Van Dooren, Dr. Cortasse focuses on digital workflows, micro-surgical protocols, and innovative instrumentation design. Notably, he co-developed the Paroplastic microsurgical instrument kit with Hu-Friedy and was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix de l'Innovation in 2016 for instrument design.
