What it covers
The role of the dentist in sleep medicine has undergone a great evolution in recent years. Thus, the area of orofacial pain has become immensely closer to sleep medicine and a new concept,
dental sleep medicine, has also been generated. This area of interest does not only involve sleep bruxism as in the past but also includes different concepts that influence sleep and its different pathologies.
The purpose of this presentation is to review all the different areas where the orofacial pain dentist can make a contribution in sleep medicine, from diagnosis to treatment.

The field of Orofacial Pain has rapidly gained interest since the new definition of Dental Sleep Medicine pays attention not only to sleep-disordered breathing conditions but also to those conditions related to sleep that can have an impact on the patient’s overall health, i.e. sleep bruxism, GERD, oral moistening disorders, sleep headaches and other kinetic mandibular disorders.
