What it covers
In the last decade, the field of Sleep Medicine has gained among those general dentists and clinicians who were already devoted to the treatment of Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain.
The purpose of this lecture is to provide an overview of the mechanisms underlying the bidirectional relationship between sleep and orofacial pain in three main areas: chronic musculoskeletal pain, neurovascular orofacial pain, and neuropathic orofacial pain.
Special attention is paid to conservative behavioral and pharmacological therapies.

Finally, to complete the season, Prof. Gary Klasser discusses the potential etiologic mechanisms of burning mouth syndrome, as well as on evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic protocols for this extremely problematic disorder.

The field of Orofacial Pain has rapidly gained interest since the new definition of Dental Sleep Medicine pays attention not only to sleep-disordered breathing conditions but also to those conditions related to sleep that can have an impact on the patient’s overall health, i.e. sleep bruxism, GERD, oral moistening disorders, sleep headaches and other kinetic mandibular disorders.
