What it covers

The 2018 bruxism consensus paper provided two separate definitions for sleep bruxism (SB) and awake bruxism (AB). The introduction of a specific definition for AB is of particular interest because it has implications concerning its diagnosis, especially in light of the influence that the adoption of different diagnostic strategies may have on the prevalence data reported.
You will understand that muscle behavior should be measured at best with continuous electromyographic recordings during wakefulness. On the other hand, it should be recognized that acquiring hour-long EMG recordings while awake is difficult for obvious technical reasons as well as discomfort for the patients. For this reason, an alternative option to AB assessment, viz., the Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), has been suggested.
This lecture guides you through the latest novelties on the use of EMA in clinical and research settings, with a focus on its diagnostic and therapeutical implications.

Bruxism is an oral condition that is gaining increasing interest from several communities of medical and dental practitioners. Over the past decade, an expert panel has worked to provide a consensus definition of bruxism as an umbrella term to indicate different masticatory muscle activities, with or without teeth contact, that may occur during sleep or wakefulness. More recently, dedicated closed meetings were held during IADR General Sessions from 2018 on to start working on a multidimensional evaluation tool for bruxism. This instrument, the Standardized Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism (STAB), aims to provide an overview to evaluate multiple issues concerning bruxism etiology, status, consequences and comorbid conditions. Within these premises, the newest findings in bruxism research and future goals of the expert panel agenda can be shared with the dental community.
