What it covers
The term orofacial pain commonly refers to pain associated
with the hard and soft tissues of the head, face, oral cavity,
and neck. Prof. Dr. Steven Bender discusses and describes three major
orofacial pain disorders: TMDs, oromotor and jaw behavior disorders,
and neurovascular and headache disorders.
He then explains that the pathophysiology of OFPs may be due to diseases
of the orofacial structures, musculoskeletal system disorders, peripheral
or central nervous system disorders, systemic maladies, the manifestation
of psychosocial disorders, or possibly the sequela of poor sleep.

Finally, to complete the season, Prof. Gary Klasser discusses the potential etiologic mechanisms of burning mouth syndrome, as well as on evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic protocols for this extremely problematic disorder.

Dr. Steven Bender is a Clinical Associate Professor in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Texas A&M College of Dentistry in Dallas Texas and serves as the director of the Clinical Center for Facial Pain and Sleep Medicine, Texas A&M Health, Dallas, TX. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and has earned Fellowships in the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, the American Headache Society, the International Academy of Oral Oncology, and the American College of Dentists. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas in 1986 and practiced general and restorative dentistry in Plano, TX. From 1998-2000, he studied orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders at the Parker E Mahan Facial Pain Center at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, Gainesville Florida. From 2000-2015, Dr. Bender maintained a private practice limited to orofacial pain and sleep disorders before becoming a full-time faculty member at Texas A&M College of Dentistry in 2016. He is a past president of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain as well as the Fourth District Dental Society of Texas and the Dallas Academy of General Dentistry. In addition, he has served as a consultant for the United States Army. Dr. Bender has lectured locally, nationally, and internationally on the topics of headache, TMD, facial pains, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology of the stomatognathic system, and sleep and sleep disorders. He has published in peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as contributed to several textbook chapters. Dr. Bender regularly mentors post-graduate students during their research projects and dissertation preparation at the College of Dentistry. In 2019 Dr. Bender was awarded Faculty Member Induction to Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society.
